Our Solid Waste Division oversees the operation of a solid waste landfill located on Blasé Nemeth Road in Painesville Township. Our entire landfill site includes 400 acres of vacant land. Only 250 of these acres are presently incorporated in the landfill operation licensed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA). The 250 acres are divided into four waste cells, three of which are filled and capped, and the forth that is in current operation. The site has space for expansion that will allow operation of the site as a landfill for approximately 25 more years.

While the daily tasks of placement and compaction of the solid waste, and the extraction and sale of the methane gas generated by the composting waste, is performed by contractors, the general operation of the landfill is the responsibility of County Personnel. This includes maintenance of the closed waste cells, compliance reporting to the OEPA, and periodic landfill license renewal. County personnel also operate the truck scales used to weigh incoming loads for calculation of tipping fees. Most of the waste comes from contract haulers that are billed on a monthly basis, however our operators handle cash receipts from residents and other occasional haulers.

The County also operates a recycling program through the Solid Waste Division. The program is overseen by the Solid Waste Division. The program is promoted by the Utilities Department and the County Board of Commissioners, and is subsidized by landfill tipping fees.
