2007 Annual Report - Classification

      Classification Definition:   A formal process for managing inmates and administering facilities based upon an agency mission, measurable goals and a process of assessment for risk and need that directs the efficient allocation of agency resources.  The process relies on trained classification staff, the use of reliable and valid data, validated assessment instruments and the conducting of process assessment and outcome evaluation.  

            For the past nine years the main goals of the Classification Supervisors and Officers has been, to maintain the lowest error rate and, to ensure that each inmate entering our facility will be housed correctly.  To do this our Classification Group work together and take pride in the way Classification is complete, and the steps we take to reduce potential incidents in our facility, which safely maintains the safely jail staff and  the inmates housed in our facility. 

            With the assistants of Sgt. Michele Prather (Senior Classification Supervisor) the Classification Group continues to ensure that all inmates are properly housed, and accurately classification and re-classification correctly. They continue to do excellent job in Classification and with the Officers in the group.

       For the 2007 year our Classification Work Group completed a total of 5171 Classifications, 3979 were initial classifications or 76.7% and 1192 were re-classifications or 23.0%  There were 19 errors in 2206 or 0.40% of total classifications this year, which dropped our errors rate by 23 or 0.39% better then the 2006. 

            In our ninth year the Classification Supervisors has continuously monitored Officers’ progress and in do so, tracked to number of classification and re-classifications completed by each Officer thought out the year. This year five Officers completed the most classifications and re-classifications, these Officers were commended for their professionalism, dedication and their outstanding job in the Classification work group. 

            Supervisors of the Classification Work Group presented a letter to each Officer for their outstanding work for 2006.  Those Officers are as follows with the number of inmates Classified:

Officer Pennock with 513 classified
Officer Brueggeman with 371 classified
Officer Loepp with 249 classified
Officer Howard with 249 classified
Officer Sciancalepore with 239 classified

            In 2008 there will be no changes to monitoring and tracking inmates. The performance of all Officers working within the Classification work group will be to maintain consistency and, to continue our excellent performance throughout 2008.  Our goals for 2008 will be to ensure that more male Officers are more active on a daily basis in completing classification. To also look at restructuring the classification form to the Officers, get more information that will enable the Officers improve their own performance when classifying inmates.  This following the Classification Mission Statement which states:  “the mission of the Classification Work Group is to classify and separate inmates with other inmates of similar backgrounds, providing inmates and staff members with the maximum amount of safety and security.”
