Lake County Sheriff's Office
Since 1993 the Sheriff's Office Generated & Returned To The General Fund Of Lake County Over 36 Million Dollars in Revenue

Every citizen in Lake County, in the State of Ohio, and throughout the United States is well aware of the rising costs of daily household operations.  Sky rocketing gasoline prices, home heating oil or natural gas costs, rising electricity rates, medical costs, spiraling costs for food, construction and maintenance material costs ... the list is endless.

The cost of operations for the Sheriff's Office mirror those that each homeowner and citizen experiences on a daily basis.  Since 1993 our county jail population has tripled, calls for service have risen sharply in the patrol division, court house security has more then  doubled the manpower levels required of the Sheriff's Office 13 years ago, cost for vehicle purchasing/maintenance/fuel has dramatically increased, and health care for employees is a reflection of the financial crisis the health care industry has imposed upon America.

Since 1993 the Sheriff's Office has worked diligently to off-set the costs of our criminal justice system by returning revenue back to the General Fund of Lake County.  In the past 14 years the Sheriff's Office has returned over $36 million dollars, nearly three (3) full years of its operating budget, back to the General Fund.

Such revenue comes from a wide-variety of sources that include: rented bed space in the jail to the United States Marshal Service and out-of-county agencies, commissions paid for the use of the jail phone system, revenue generated by charging inmates for their stay in jail, traffic fines and waivers, Sheriff's Fees, DUI Fines, poundage from Sheriff's Property Sales, grants to offset construction costs, as well as grants for increased personnel.

The following is a sampling of the areas returning revenue to the General Fund over the past 5 years:

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has established a history of thinking outside of the box to explore and utilize ways to reduce its operational costs to lessen the financial burden to the citizens of Lake County.  Here are just a few:

bulletPurchased a 1978 rescue squad from Painesville Fire in 1993 for the cost of $1 to be used by the SWAT Team to transport personnel and equipment to incidents.  The vehicle is still in service and actively used today.
bulletPurchased a used bus from LakeTran for $1 in 2001 to be used by the Corrections Division to transport food, equipment, and inmates between the two jail facilities.  It is our primary vehicle used today.
bulletBecame the first jail in the State of Ohio to use the Central Pharmacy of Ohio to offset the costs of medications to inmates ... reducing the cost of medications in the jail facilities by $44,000 in 2004
bulletUsed forfeiture monies to offset the costs of our sheriff's vehicle replacement program
bulletCreated a program to use sample medications via pharmaceutical reps, a program routinely used by physicians' offices, to reduce the cost of medications supplied to inmates
