    UPDATE: CCW (Concealed Carry) Registration Office Re-Opened

    After meeting with our legal advisors and compliance with the new health directives we have decided to reopen our CCW Office with new restrictions. We will maintain operations on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (7:40 am – 3:30 pm), and Thursday (11:30 pm to 6 pm). However, previous appointments scheduled prior to today have been cancelled. The scheduling online has been revised to limit the number of individuals coming in at the same time to register so we can maintain compliance with the new health codes in response to COVID-19.

    We ask everyone needing to register/reregister for their CCW, or obtain a background check, go online at https://www.lakecountyohio.gov/sheriffoffice/Concealed-Carry to register. You will note that the hours for appointments are spaced father apart to limit the amount of people in one space. During this time appointments will be limited to 18 per day. Further, only the person registering/reregistering or obtaining a background will be permitted to enter. All other friends or family who arrive with them will have to stay outside in the vehicles.

    Our CCW Office registers/registers nearly 9,000 people per year and is the 2nd largest CCW operating office in the State of Ohio. We believe in the importance of the 2nd Amendment and giving our citizens access to our CCW Office. This is why we have moved so quickly to reopen. However, under the current coronavirus situation we cannot continue to operate with our normal large numbers and still meet the Ohio Department of Health standards.

    As soon as our current national health situation changes we will resume normal operations and increase the number of applications we handle each day.

    If you are coming to have a Webcheck or Fingerprinting obtained these will still be taken on a walk-in basis. If you are coming in for a Webcheck for employment please know where the background results are being mailed to and a have photo identification.

    The fees are as follows:

    • BCI- $30.00
    • FBI- $30.00 
      Note:   If you need both BCI and FBI- $60.00  .....   CASH, MONEY ORDER or CERTIFIED BANK CHECK are only forms of payment.

     

    CCW Scheduling

    To better serve the citizens applying for CHL (Concealed Handgun License) or renewing a CHL use the scheduling program button located above "Schedule Appointment" We do not take walk-in applicants for the CHL application process.  Any person who wants to apply for a CHL must schedule their appointment.

    THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED FOR APPLYING FOR A CHL PERMIT:

    • The applicant must bring a copy of their minimum 8 hours of training. Please note that training is a minimum of 6 hours of classroom and a minimum of 2 hours of range. The training must be completed by a national gun advocacy organization. Training is NOT offered by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as you should contact your local sporting goods or gun shops for class information. Please make sure that the organization that you choose is a credited course.  
    • Effective 11/05/2018, Senate Bill 81, any applicant that is an ACTIVE or RESERVE member of the armed forces of the United States or the applicant has RETIRED from or HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the military service in the ACTIVE or RESERVE armed forces of the UNITED STATES a DD214 will suffice for your training.  There will be no charge for the CHL process, as long as $1.5 million has not been exceeded for military permits throughout the State of Ohio.  
    • The CHL application, which may have been provided by your instructor. If your instructor has not provided you an application you can get an application on line fromAttorney General's Office, or at the office when you apply. You also may stop anytime at the front lobby of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, located at 104 E. Erie Street in Painesville.  
    • THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED FOR APPLYING FOR A CHL PERMIT: If you have been a resident of the State of Ohio for the past 5 years a fee of $67.00 in CASH, MONEY ORDER or CERTIFIED BANK CHECK are only forms of payment accepted. If you have lived in Ohio for less than 5 years or you live in another state but work in Ohio a fee of $78.25 by CASH, MONEY ORDER or CERTIFIED BANK CHECK is required to cover the cost of the Federal Background check. 
    • Driver’s license or government photo identification.

                                   THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED FOR RENEWING A CHL PERMIT:

    1.     Effective 11/05/2018 you may renew your permit ANYTIME before the expiration date and ANYTIME after the expiration date.

    2.     Your old CHL permit card, if you cannot find your old permit card then you must provide the office with your ORIGINAL course certificate.  

    3.     The CHL application, which could be found by this link or at the time of your appointment. 

    4.      If you have been a resident of the State of Ohio for the past 5 years a fee of $50.00 in CASH, MONEY ORDER or CERTIFIED BANK CHECK are only forms of payment accepted. If you have lived in Ohio for less than 5 years or you live in another state but work in Ohio a fee of $61.25 by CASH, MONEY ORDER or CERTIFIED BANK CHECK is required to cover the cost of the Federal Background check. 

    5.      Driver’s license or a government photo ID.

    6.    Effective 11/05/2018, Senate Bill 81, any applicant that is an ACTIVE or RESERVE member of the armed forces of the United States or the applicant has RETIRED from or HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the military service in the ACTIVE or RESERVE armed forces of the UNITED STATES a DD214 will suffice for your training.  There will be no charge for the CHL process, as long as $1.5 million has not been exceeded for military permits throughout the State of Ohio.  When renewing you need to provide our office documentation showing that the applicant is ACTIVE or a RESERVE member of the armed forces of the Unites States or has RETIRED or has been given an HONORABLE DISCHARGE.

    **PLEASE NOTE THAT ON MARCH 27, 2013 HB495 WENT INTO EFFECT. WHEN THIS LAW WENT INTO EFFECT IT ELIMINATED THE RENEWAL COMPETENCY CERTIFICATE ON YOUR SECOND RENEWAL, NO ADDIDTIONAL COURSES ARE REQUIRED TO RENEW YOUR CHL PERMIT.**  

    All applicants will have their fingerprints obtained electronically and submitted to Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification for the background check.  All applicants will also be run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS).   If the office is unable to electronically scan the applicants fingerprints or if the electronic system is unavailable finger print cards will be used.  

    If the applicant is denied the Lake County Sheriff’s Office will send the denial letter by U.S.P.S. Certified Mail to the persons address on the application. The applicant has a right to appeal the denial decision as outlined in the denial letter.  

    In an effort to make the application process efficient, easy to follow, and available to all citizens wishing to apply, the times for accepting applications may change after the first month to better accommodate everyone. This information will be provided to everyone through the media and on the Sheriff's Office web site at www.sheriffdunlap.org

    Any questions anyone may have concerning a CHL or a “TEMPORARY EMERGENCY PERMIT “can contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 440-350-5676 or 440-350-5620.  

    ** If you so desire to have your permit mailed to you then YOU must provide a self-addressed envelope at the time of application. The amount of postage needs to be $0.70 cents or greater in order to be mailed. The applicant must also sign the “Release of Liability Form” which is available at the Lake County CHL Office, before the permit will be mailed.
