Volunteer Opportunities with Lake SWCD
Mailings
Lake SWCD periodically sends out bulk mailings. Mostly this involves placing address labels, sorting and counting pieces, and occasionally folding and stuffing envelopes. Time commitment would be 2-3 hours, up to 6 times per year.
Annual Meeting Elections
Each fall during our Annual Meeting, Lake SWCD elects new supervisors. This is an official election and the volunteer would help register voters, explain the ballot system, and retrieve completed ballots after voting. Approximate time commitment would be 2 hours once a year at the Annual Meeting.
Watershed Watch
Every May and September, the District monitors local rivers and streams with several hundred 5-12 grade students. Upon training, volunteers would lead small groups through the sampling and identification process, and complete the appropriate paperwork to submit to ODNR. This activity involves mild to moderate exertion, and a high probability of wet feet. Up to 80 hours each year, in May and September.
Booths and Displays
Throughout the year, Lake SWCD is asked to put up displays at various community events. A volunteer interested in staffing a display should be familiar with district activities and natural resource issues in Lake County and northeast Ohio. They should also enjoy talking with the public and be willing to learn how to use educational models that are involved in the display. Time commitment is highly variable.
Tree Sale
Each spring, Lake SWCD offers tree seedlings for sale. We order the seedlings in bulk, and they are delivered the week of the sale. Many hands are needed to get trees counted and bundled into packets. Volunteers are also needed to help people pick up their orders on scheduled days. Approximate time commitment would be up to 32 hours.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these tasks, please contact the District office for more information
